Jim "Sageman" Knapp and his lovely wife Kris started Sageman Drums in 1997 from the trunk of their car. Being dedicated "Deadheads" they attended Grateful Dead concerts and music festivals all over the country. Both Jim and Kris loved concert energy, especially at the festivals and decided to put together a booth for a year and give it a try. That first booth was small but it was the start of something special.

Now, many years later they are the proud and hard working owners of a unique company that was built at the grass roots level. While their company has grown quickly they haven't forgotten where it all started and continue to have a presence at most of the major music festivals in California. The Sageman main office is located in Laguna Beach and their overflowing warehouse is in Santa Ana which houses a product line that has wildly outgrown the trunk. Their innovative product line includes world class djembe drums, old world hand percussion, clothing, jewelry, drum accessories, and authentic Balinese gazebos.
Sageman Drums sells all their products at the wholesale and retail levels. They are a faithful NAMM member and have wholesale accounts across the nation. They also offer substantial discounts to schools and educators that are looking to bring the healing nature of old world percussion to the classroom.
Jim and Kris see the same people, year after year at Festivals and have built a reputation for quality and friendly service. The Sageman look has become unmistakable. Our clothing, brochures, business cards, and this website are all illustrated by legendary surf artist Bill Ogden. He's created our famous drummer girl that can be found on our home page as well as our signature Sageman logo t-shirts. He's also created several text illustrations, and our favorite, the Sageman mascot, featured here.
