Sageman Drums is proud to announce its representation in America of Bouba Percussion, makers of quality percussion instruments from the West African country of Guinea.
Guinea, and especially the Malinké people of Upper Guinea, is renowned for its music, musicians, and musical instruments including the djembe. The history of the Malinke tribe can be traced back to the great Mali Empire of the eleventh to sixteenth centuries, an important center of Islamic culture. The djembe has always played a major role in the tribe’s rich oral tradition, with its tales of kings and wars. Music invariably accompanies Malian ceremonies, harvest feasts, weddings, funerals, and the djembe is the central instrument.
The hardwood of Guinean trees is perfectly suited for percussion instruments. It’s extremely warp resistant and is extremely durable and produces a wonderful rich sound. Sageman Drums imports only djembes made from three hardwoods: Lenge, Acajou, and Hare. The djembe heads are made of superior goatskins from Mali. Sageman Drums is now working with a group of experienced Malinké drum makers who assure quality results from the falling of mature hand-picked trees and cutting into rough shapes near Dabola in Upper Guinea, to the finishing designs and head stretching at Bouba’s workshop in Conakry’s Madina district. Additionally, this region has a reputation for producing some of the best djembes in the world.
Aboubacar “Bouba” Cisse, a Malinke artisan born in the Kankan area of Upper Guinea, has been producing these fine instruments for over 20 years and we are pleased to offer 4 different djembe models built by this world-class drum builder from Guinea. Each model varies slightly in size from 24” – 25” in height, to 12” – 13” head size. |  Traditional Ikat Drum StrapThe Sageman drum strap is the best thing going for stand up drumming. Our djembe strap is looped through the top portions of the djembe ropes and since it doesn't have any hard clips it won't scratch your djembe. These are very popular at drum circles and music festivals. They can be used in a variety of ways: playing the drum on the side of the body or through the legs while removing the weight of the drum from the lower back.
Our drum strap is available in 3 types of trim: Brown & Yellow, Blue, and Rasta. The ikat strap is padded and hand woven, the Rasta colored strap has slightly less padding but is extremely durable. All Sageman accessories carry a 90-day warranty. (Click either icon for an enlarged view)
